If you still have an old style free cellphone through Lifeline, you might be able to switch to a smartphone by switching providers.
When I got my first Obamaphone a few years ago it was a candy-bar style phone and it had a tiny screen for calls and texts. The carrier had bad reception in my area, which I did not know beforehand.
Last year I got a smartphone with 1000 free minutes monthly from QLink Wireless instead. If you can tap into free Wi-Fi somewhere it gives you free data too. Of course, texts are unlimited. Maybe some other carriers also now have these features too.
I felt really blessed to get the smartphone and free minutes. I hope this helps someone out there.
PS. If you look it up you can get free AVG anti-virus software for the smartphone too.
