I'm making some compromises but still very thankful.
While we will be able to have some decent fixins, a turkey is going to be too expensive for us. Luckily, I got a few of those little chickens you can stuff from a food pantry a few months ago that will be a substitute.
I'm making mashed potatoes with fresh potatoes and including the skins for some extra no-waste bulk to the meal. I can't afford gravy, so I'm going to make it from some of the chicken juices that fall into the roasting pan. Loose carrots around me cost 59 cents a lb., so that will make a nice side dish. Stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie filling are within the budget. I've got to budget my butter really good until then too.
I remember when a lot of American jobs would distribute turkeys for Thanksgiving and ham for Christmas before you let off for the holidays. My dad used to bring them home to us when I was a kid. It was a nice touch and helped us save money. I wish companies still gave these out.
Do you have enough extra food stamps to make a nice Thanksgiving dinner?
