I suppose what one person says is a waste another person here could argue they need. A lobster does = a rather big supply of food. That is the reason people get upset, those who use FS to get high value food items that have limited nutrition take away from the usefulness of the food stamp program. People need to eat smart and be wise. This is total nonsense b.c. your an idiot if you blow your monthly snap in 1 or 2 meals. However, from a stand point of food stamps being a form of corporate welfare as well as social welfare, a lobster being eaten at least supports a number of local and national industries. A lot of hands have "touched" the lobster from the point is was caught to when it lands on your plate. This is why food stamps is included in the Farm bill, snap supports farmers. Tho the snap program rewards the entire food industry not just the farmers. Twinkies included. A person would think that since snap, as you pointed out, is a form of commercial welfare assistance, more republicans would be on board b/c in the end, corporations are the real benefactor. Someone posted in another thread about using snap to buy foods from other countries, if they could just make a law/rule in regards to food stamps that the benefits can only be used on foods that are produced in the United States. This would at least keep most of the snap money in America and not going directly over seas. but the biggest issue would be scarcity of fruits and vegetables in the off season months. I guess this is why they don't change the rules in that way very often. It becomes a nightmare to enforce.

^ the fact that having 1 job at a minimum wage pay rate qualifies you for Food Stamps should be enough for politicians to take action yet all they do is blame the people on the government services for an economy they have ZERO control over. We are seeing the basic decay of America.

I agree with the above poster. it sucks being the working poor and doing 30-40 hours a week and not making ends meet at the dinner table.

I'm not one of those who thinks you shouldn't be able to buy treats with SNAP, because everyone needs a treat once in a while. But I would rather see people (myself included)with a limited food budget buy more healthy foods than junk. And, sometimes those healthier foods do cost more. I also think that a savvy shopper can even treat themselves to more "high-end" stuff like crab legs and shrimp when they go on sale, and coupled with a coupon or other discount. If you know your sales cycles, you can hit on some good deals and stock up, if you have space.

I understand the occasional frivolous purchase. Yes you mostly need to make it last, but being perpetually poor with nothing nice is incredibly depressing and dehumanizing. Sometimes you splurge for steaks, you work hard, you deserve nice things sometimes too. Sometimes food splurges are the only nice things you can get.
